HLTAID011 Provide First Aid

The Certificate Behind Every Maritime Ticket

Every AMSA certificate of competency needs a current first aid certificate sitting behind it. This is that course. Nationally recognised, run at our Newcastle centre, and it counts for just as much ashore as it does at sea. You do not need experience and you do not need to be working on the water. Most people come through because their maritime ticket depends on it. Plenty come through because their job ashore asks for it.

This unit is designed in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. It equips you with the skills and knowledge to provide first aid response, life support, and management of casualties, the incident, and other first aiders until qualified medical help arrives.

Principles of first aid: the basics, and why they matter in an emergency
Assessing the situation: keeping yourself, bystanders and the injured person safe
Basic life support (DRSABCD): Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation
CPR technique: hands on, for adults, children and infants
Wound care: cuts, abrasions and burns
Fractures and dislocations: recognising them and what to do
Bites and stings: the common Australian ones
Medical conditions: asthma, anaphylaxis, seizures and stroke
First aid equipment: first aid kits and automated external defibrillators (AEDs)

  • Students working through a Coxswain, General Purpose Hand, MED 2 or Master ticket with us
  • Skippers and owners of charter, fishing and workboats
  • Anyone ashore who needs a nationally recognised first aid certificate for work, including people responsible for children

There are generally no prerequisites for this course, though you will need basic literacy and numeracy skills. If you are not sure whether it covers what your employer is asking for, call us and we will check it for you.

A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment issued by Maritime & Safety Training NSW, RTO 90440. It is recognised by employers and regulators across Australia.

A nationally recognised first aid certificate is one of the requirements for certification as a Master, Mate, Coxswain or Marine Engine Driver near coastal. It sits alongside your qualification, your qualifying sea service, your radio certificate and your AMSA final assessment.

If you are working through a ticket with us, this is the piece people most often leave until last and then get held up on. Do it early.

People seeking certification should check with AMSA.
