This course is tailored for individuals aiming to become proficient Marine Engine Drivers in near coastal waters. It offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, ensuring participants are well-equipped to operate and maintain marine engines safely and efficiently.
This course is designed for students who have achieved 80% of the AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) sea time requirements for Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC Certificate of Competency.

Entry Requirements:
To ensure you have the right skills and support to succeed in your course, a Language, Literacy, and
Numeracy (LLN) evaluation helps identify any areas where you may require additional support to help
you achieve your goals.
You will also be required to hold at least 80% of the AMSA sea service requirements. Refer to the MED2
Entry Requirements Info Sheet for further details on sea service requirements and submitting evidence.
Due to the physical requirements of this qualification, the Learner must be physically fit.
Career Opportunities and Study Pathways
This qualification applies to people working in maritime industry seeking an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) certificate of competency in the capacity of:
- Chief engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <750 kW within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) or
- Second engineer on vessels with an inboard engine with propulsion power <1500 kW within the EEZ or
- Chief or second engineer on vessels with an outboard engine with unlimited propulsion power within the EEZ or
- Assistant under direct supervision of a chief engineer or
- Worker in an engine room of a vessel <80 m long with propulsion power <3000 kW.

Marine Engine Driver Grade 2
Operate and maintain engines on vessels within near coastal waters. This role involves ensuring the smooth operation of marine engines, troubleshooting issues, and performing routine maintenance.
Chief Engineer on Smaller Vessels
Serve as the primary engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 750 KW within the Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ). This role involves overseeing all engine operations and maintenance tasks.
Second Engineer on Larger Vessels
Work as a supporting engineer on vessels with propulsion power up to 1500 KW within the EEZ. Assist the chief engineer in managing and maintaining the vessel's engine systems.
Marine Workshop Technician
Work in marine workshops or shipyards, specialising in the repair, maintenance, and overhaul of marine engines and related systems.
Marine Surveyor Assistant
Assist marine surveyors in inspecting and assessing the condition of marine engines and systems, ensuring they meet regulatory standards and requirements.
Licensing/Regulatory Information
This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certification as a Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 Near Coastal NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D.
AMSA certification will require:
- achieving MAR30821 Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2 NC)
- sea service consisting of:
- 180 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book
- or 360 days qualifying sea service
- or 120 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book, while holding a Coxswain 1 (Cox 1), Coxswain 2 endorsed for 500 kW inboard propulsion (Cox 2 500 kW), or Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 (MED 3)
- or 240 days qualifying sea service while holding a Cox 1, Cox 2 500 kW or MED 3
- or 90 days qualifying sea service and a completed AMSA approved task book while holding a workshop skill equivalent qualification
- or 180 days qualifying sea service while holding a workshop skill equivalent qualification
- meeting the medical and eyesight requirements specified in the NSCV Part D
- assessment by an AMSA approved assessor using the AMSA mandated practical assessment (AMPA)
