Even if you have grown up on boats your entire life, you still need to pursue the appropriate type of Coxswain licence before you can put that experience to work commercially.
What does Coxswain licensing involve?
In order to better understand the types of jobs that you can apply for with your Coxswain licence, you must first understand a little bit more about what these courses entail. A general Coxswain licensing course typically involves a number of units of competency like advancing the types of skills that you would need to survive in the event of a vessel abandonment, basic servicing and maintenance skills, maintenance of the main propulsion unit, maintenance of all auxiliary systems and more. Firefighting procedures and other emergency situations are also covered extensively.
A Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal certificate of competency covers command of smaller commercial vessels inside the near coastal area. The vessel length, propulsion power and operating limits that apply to your ticket are set by AMSA, and they are listed on the course page.

What can you do with a Coxswain licence?
Once you have finished your coursework and hold your Coxswain certificate of competency, you can take charge of smaller commercial vessels in near coastal waters. That covers work like whale watching and sightseeing trips, dive and fishing charters, water taxis and small passenger ferries, and support and workboat crews. Bigger vessels and wider operating areas need a higher ticket, such as Master up to 24 metres.
If you want to run charter work on your own vessel, your Coxswain ticket covers you to command it. The vessel itself also has to be surveyed and certified for commercial operation, which is a separate process with AMSA.
